    Hi

I would love a cheatsheet (just very basic to catch hang related debug info) on kmdb while booting smartos on a given hardware so that i can understand the issue on my own. i dont know much about using kmdb in detail/tricks and dont have patience to keep hitting ::step/::step over or ] accelerators. i have a case where when trying smartos (trying to boot using platform raw image way) on my setup seems to hang at: impl_ddi_callback_init (goes into some kind of loop/waits for ever).

Note: same hardware works for omniOS text based boot easily from a iso file using grub2's iso method from my linux distro.

    thanks in advance

    1. Feb 02, 2013

just an update: Turned the verbose setting along with kd boot option and saw hang during below:

        >kb80420 is /pci(0,0isa)1f/i8042@1,60/keyboard@0

module:  kb8042 ,i.e possibly hang during keyboard/mouse driver at boot time. . Not sure why the omniOS text installer ran past and gave me root prompt (may be by default it runs without console service?)

Is there any option to avoid this hang, these are laptops with regular keyboard setups.

(kmdb was very useful (-kvd option) along with moddebug/W 80000000 to show location of the hang place for me.)

HP Microserver G8 does NOT work with SmartOS as of today.

The included HP 332i dual NIC is not supported.

Will work with a PCI Intel NIC but G8 Microserver has only one PCI slot.

  3. Dec 05, 2013

    Ben,

That's not quite correct. I have the current SmartOS live "USB" distribution running on a Gen8 Microserver, booting from a MicroSD card in the internal card reader. But there are limitations currently:

    - The B120i FakeRAID can be switched to AHCI mode in the BIOS. The downside of this is that the builtin iLO management software keeps the fans running at comparably high speed, making it too loud for an office environment. I've installed a HP H220 HBA in the PCIe slot as a workaround.

    - The H332i Dual Gigabit NIC (Broadcom 5720 chipset) is detected properly and works okay when connected to a Fast Ethernet hub or switch. It does not work at all when connected to a Gigabit network, though. The NICs lock up with an error message: "bge_chip_poll_engine failed". The same happens when trying to start a KVM zone. Joyent zones work without issues, though.

    - The HP H220 HBA (LSI 2308 chipset) works fine but reports the following on the console every once in a while:  scsi: [ID 107833 kern.notice] /pci@0,0/pci8086,151@1/pci1590,41@0 (mpt_sas0):#012#011send_sep act 0: ioc status:8004 loginfo 31200060

    - The HP BIOS does not build a SRAT table, so SmartOS throws a warning on boot. The "Node Interleaving" BIOS option does not change this behavior.

    - The boot process seems to halt for approx 20 seconds after displaying "bss=0x0". Not sure whether that's normal behavior.

    - It also reports "KCS error: ff" during boot. I haven't looked into that yet.
